Al Sadr Does the Christian Thing

Posted by Jeff Huber

It was mighty Christian of Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr to tell his Mahdi Army to stop fighting in Basra.  I’m afraid I would have taken a far more Old Testament approach to the recent violence in Iraq.

It’s not, after all, like al-Sadr and his followers were the ones who started this latest round of bang-bang.  It was, in fact, al-Sadr’s self imposed moratorium on violence that gave President Bush’s “main man” General David Petraeus grist for his claim that the surge was “working.”  You’d think maybe Petraeus would have wanted to leave the hornet’s nest alone; but no.  He decided to target ”criminal” and “rogue” elements within the Sadr organization.

U.S. forces and the Badr Organization, a rival Shiite group, conducted raids for months on Sadr’s people.  The Mahdis warned repeatedly that they would fight back, and they finally did.  Shocking.

Fox's indecency fine: where is the family-values outrage?

Oh this is rich:

"Fox Broadcasting announced Monday it would not pay the $91,000 fine it received for broadcasting an episode of reality show “Married in America” which included graphic scenes at a bachelor party.

A statement issued Monday by Fox Broadcasting contests the Federal Communications Commission’s fairness in fining the network fines totaling $91,000 for broadcasting a certain “Married in America” episode that included graphic scenes which depict sexual organs.

Fox is also asking the F. C. C. to reconsider the fines on the 13 owned and affiliated stations that broadcast the “Married by America” episode, the New York Times reports.

“Fox believes that the F. C. C.’s decision in this case was arbitrary and capricious, inconsistent with precedent and patently unconstitutional,” Scott Grogin, the company’s senior vice president for corporate communications, said in a statement."

Really? So not going to pay the fine because it is unconstitutional? Where is the family-values crowd? Where is the outrage? Right, just as I thought: crickets.

The Tesseract Archipelago...

Cross-Posted at Huffington Post

---I AM ANGRY---

The Bush administration has indeed accomplished a mission, intended or not, to recreate the United States into a super-power demon, a super-power monster, a super-power consuming itself and everything around it.  A country that has secret prisons within secret prisons built on an island belonging to the very type of government we claim to be the opposite of is not a democracy.

For the commie fearing right-wingers, their collective  silence about US funding of communist Cuba through a business arrangement in which they give us land to house our concentration camps on  is astounding.  It is, however, no surprise that nationalists see human rights abuses as a necessary fall-out of war.  After all, Christian extremists, like their Muslim counterparts see war as a tool of God, and they see God in a single man giving them orders, not in anything divine:

'"You will go with General Boykin and Green Beret instructors to places where no civilians and few soldiers ever go," the Rev. Bobby Welch told pastors in a letter inviting them to attend the two-day Super FAITH Force Multiplier session. "We must find a group of men who are warriors of FAITH, pastors who have the guts to lead this nation to Christ and revival!" Welch, a friend of Boykin's, told the invitees they would see Boykin's headquarters, a demonstration of "today's war-fighting weapons" and how "Special Forces attack the enemy inside buildings (live fire/real bullets)" as well as hear a speech and get "informal time" with Boykin."

Or as Boykin - one of the architects of the Abu Ghraib concentration camp model, which was based on the Gitmo model -  once said about George W. Bush:

"Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. Why is he there? And I tell you this morning that he's in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this." (NYT, 10-17-2003)

Never mind that one has to first have a soul in order to have a conscience through which something like real faith can be processed. Nationalists, religious or otherwise, don't have a soul. They have a flag and some other trinkets and they have bitter hate mixed with mortal fear of something out in the ether. Boykin has his uniform, his cross, and his torture chamber to help him justify the horrors of his actions as somehow all-American and Christian.

That is all Boykin has to measure his love of country by,  his love of humanity by, if such obscene nationalism and need for supremacy can ever be measured by something as clean and selfless as love.

---WHY AM I ANGRY?---

Because I woke up to this:

"Somewhere amid the cactus-studded hills on this sprawling Navy base, separate from the cells where hundreds of men suspected of links to al-Qaida and the Taliban have been locked up for years, is a place even more closely guarded — a jailhouse so protected that its very location is top secret.

For the first time, the top commander of detention operations at Guantanamo has confirmed the existence of the mysterious Camp 7. In an interview with The Associated Press, Rear Adm. Mark Buzby also provided a few details about the maximum-security lockup.

Guantanamo commanders said Camp 7 is for key alleged al-Qaida members, who must be kept apart from other prisoners to prevent them from retaliating against long-term detainees who have talked to interrogators. They also want the location kept secret for fear of terrorist attack."

---YOU SEE WHY I AM ANGRY?---

A concentration camp within a concentration camp that we pay a Communist nation to host. Sounds so simple, does it not?  The problem is that there were never that many al Qaeda members to justify Gitmo's larger prison to begin with.

At their peak, before 9/11, al Qaeda numbered under 200.  So just who is being hosted at Camp 7 and why is it so secret that no one knows - until now - that it even existed? Osama bin Laden, if I recall is vacationing in Pakistan, along with his major commanders. They too have guns and God, always a potent mixture.  The Taliban's most dangerous leaders are mostly back in Afghanistan and some are along with bin Laden on vacation in Pakistan, also in possession of guns, justified by their God.

We have secret prisons all over the world, where secret "al Qaeda" and secret "Taliban" prisoners are being held. We have the larger camps at Gitmo too, where "al Qaeda" and "Taliban" secret prisoners are secretly being held. So I ask again, just who the hell - and how many - prisoners are being held at Camp 7? More importantly, what kind of prisoners would a man like Boykin select? That, my friends, is what scares me the most.

I know, the right-wing nationalists will argue something about security and something about 9/11, again to justify war on behalf of God or something of the sort.  Nationalists always argue for an unseen, unheard, unreal threat existing somewhere in the shadows. Come to think of it, an unseen, unheard, unreal threat existing in the shadows sounds like their description of God. Interesting, is it not, that  religious nationalists such as these define God the same way they define their enemy? And what of their followers, the lower rungs of the symbol-loving faithful?

You just need to look through the annals of history if you want examples of how the mindless drone swallows whole the lie of a threat and defends to the death that lie no matter all the evidence to the contrary.

Aside from the security propaganda and its flag-waving boot-marchers, however, I want a legitimate explanation as to why we need this many camps, this many secret camps within camps, and just who the hell is being held there in secret and why in secret.  I demand this as a US citizen. Because if we have people secretly boxed within secret boxes, which house even more secret boxes filled with even more secret people, then we cannot continue calling ourselves a democracy.

---WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SAY?---

Perhaps we can call ourselves a secret democracy, encased in a tesseract and planted on an island owned by a declared enemy, but that would be too long a description when there is a far shorter and more direct way to say what we are becoming: a fascist nation.

Tim LaHaye-type nuts awaiting end of the world in Russia...

Apparently these folks are so afraid of being left behind that they are willing to either freeze to death or blow themselves up to get to heaven faster:

"Members of a doomsday cult that believes the world will end next May and that barcodes are a sign of the Antichrist are holed up in a cave in south-east Russia and threatening to blow themselves up if the authorities try and eject them.

Yesterday, priests and officials were trying to talk to the 29, mainly female, followers of "Father" Pyotr Kuznetsov, founder of the "True Russian Orthodox Church" sect. Inside the cave near Nikoskoye, a village about 400 miles south-east of Moscow, the cult has stockpiled food and 100 gallons of kerosene. There were also reports that when an approach was made a few days ago, gunshots came from the cave. Its inhabitants include four children, one only 16 months old."

Sadly, there are babies in there with these lunatics.

The march of the hate constituency ...

Well, seems like wannabe Jew Michelle Malkin is busy continuing her assault on children, only now we learn that the impetus for the attacks were pushed out of Senator McConnell's office. You know, I cannot wait until Mike Rogers does his expose.  On the other side of the of the psychotic right is Ann Coulter's anti-Semite following, which strangely also happens to adore wannabe Jew Michelle Malkin. I dare say I am very confused.

Well, not really. You see, Malkin is not a Jew no matter how much she tries and Coulter is not a Christian, although I have yet to see her try. What both women are are pro-fascism, big corporations, and bimbo talking heads for the military-industrial complex. Their followers don't much care that both women are - as  poet William Blake once said of poet John Milton - "of the devil's party," so long as they continue to pen mastabatory material for the evisceration of the US Constitution.

Here is a small collection of right-wing antisemitism from the oh so tolerant Christian Right:

From mental all-star Mac's Mind we get the defense of Ann Coulter as follows:

"Ann sure knows how to get a rise out of the left and moderates inbetween. Her latest happened during a interview with Donny Deutsch’s NOBOBY watches CNBC show."

See, no one saw it happen, so what's the big deal? Other not entirely unique defenses of Ann Coulter is that Jesus said the same thing:

"The Epistle to the Hebrews asserts the superiority of Christ to the prophets, the angels, Moses, Joshua, and the Jewish priesthood. Christ brings a superior covenant, a superior tabernacle, and makes a superior sacrifice. Like many other authors whose task is Christian self-definition, this author uses the Hebrew Scriptures to illustrate the authenticity of his claims. For example, several Old Testament prophets mention a new covenant that God will make with the Jews. Drawing on Platonic thought, this author argues that the old covenant was a foreshadowing of the new, an imperfect reflection of a perfect reality.

Scholars do not know when or where this book was written. It is clear, though, that the author was concerned to define group boundaries. He argued that Christianity represented the perfection of Judaism. Christianity was the religion foretold by the prophets. Those who did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, moreover, were not the true people of God."

Right then. A book written by someone, somewhere attributes to Jesus what Neo-Nazi Ann vomited up on live TV. Assuming this stellar sourcing is true, however, still leaves Jesus with a bit of a position that is more defensible than Ann's. You see, Jesus happened to be Jewish. Ann, on the other hand, makes her living penning hate. See the difference?

When all else fails, the right-wing hate constituency claims this is a manufactured scandal:

"This week's manufactured Media Matters scandal is now online. The Jewish blogs and Democratic organizations are all over it. And wow, it is totally fucking retarded"

I see, the Jewish blogs are totally retarded and the outrage? Well, that is manufactured too. Something tells me the right does not realize where their ass is in relation to their head. I have long warned Israel against aligning with the right wing of America, because all that manufactured Christian support was not remotely about Israel or supporting Jews.

Wait, but there is more.  If you are are a publication run by war profiteers, then the best result is to blame the liberal media:

"Teasing yet another (manufactured) Ann Coulter controversy, ABCNews.com practically suggested that Coulter is an anti-Semite, and when you follow the bread crumbs, you'll find Media Matters the culprit behind the half-baked cake. "The columnist suggested that the U.S. would be a better place without Jews," teased a headline in the rotating news summary on ABC's Web site (see screencap at right).

Yet in context, it's quite logical to conclude Coulter means that, as a Christian, she would like everyone to embrace Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, hence securing them eternal life in Heaven. Grounded in historical Christian teaching, her desire for all to believe in Jesus (and hence be Christians) is not a racist or genocidal point-of-view, but a loving, religious one, however awkwardly stated it may have been in her recent interview."

Right. She is just a good, tolerant girl who only wants others to love the lord and savior. Are you kidding me? A woman who calls for the death and mass murder of political opponents love Jesus Christ? Just fucking embrace your antisemitism. No excuse is going make this more palpable to us, Jews, oh so sensitive as we are.

Was the right wing against gays before it was for it?

Hatenomore Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad caused quite a stir for the right-wing hate constituency. Discussing his extremist views on the topic of homosexuality, Ahmadinejad claimed about Iran "we don't have homosexuals." His latest statement and his general views on the evil of homosexuality are  and have been offensive to the left-wing of the international community. Strangely enough, the right wing has suddenly adopted a pro-GLBT stance - if you can imagine - and gathered for a non-stop protest, mass demonstrations against such hate mongering, and all-around general screaming.

"When Ahmadinejad told Columbia today that Iran doesn't have homosexuals, he meant that the theocracy has done its level best to cleanse Iran of gays and lesbians. He also means that they'll get rid of any more they find. Does Columbia support that? If not, why invite the executioner of Iranian homosexuals to speak at their campus?" (Source)

Interestingly, most right-wing bloggers have expressed this same exact view and have rightfully condemned the anti-gay sentiment, even going as far as locating footage of executed gay men in Iran, but they don't seem to see their similar extremism and hate against the GLBT community in the US.

Noting why there are no gays in Iran, one blogger notes:

"It's because they're trying to kill them all. These are two gay teenagers who were kept in a cage, publicly humiliated, gruesomely hung, and left to dangle in front of the macabre crowd. That way they could serve as a warning to anyone who would dare be homosexual in Iran's Islamic utopia" (Source)

Seriously, the anti-gay rhetoric got much more attention from the right-wing blogs than other, equally bizarre comments made by the Iranian president.

Bill O'Reilly is in love with Matt Damon

cross-posted at HuffPo

No matter how hard Bill O'Reilly tries to be Joe McCarthy, he always ends up being simply the official Fox (minus News) dunce of hate and sexual frustration that has come to symbolize far right extremists. His sexual confusion simply gets the better of his fascist worldview every single time.

Although Billy usually prefers to write soft porn and on occasion children's books (which is certainly a disturbing combination), he has now taken it upon himself to go after Matt Damon for being un-American. While it is easy to believe that Billy is just displaying his usual fascist propaganda. The reality in this case, however, appears to be much more personal. Simply put, I think Bill O'Reilly has a crush on Matt Damon.

While it is true that Billy spends a great deal of time worried about
Lesbian gangs running amok all over America
, his real and hidden fear is that Matt Damon will reject his rather smallish loofah.

Romney just lost his election bid for any office, ever...

Boy, when white power stumbles, it really stumbles:

"Republican presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney cited the social welfare network of the Lebanese Hezbollah terror group as a role model the U.S. should copy to help promote "goodness" and "freedom" around the world.

Sections of Hezbollah's social welfare network, including schools and camps, are routinely used by the terror group to indoctrinate students in anti-Israel propaganda, instruct in military tactics and promote Shiite Islamic beliefs, including the waging of a final, apocalyptic world battle against "evil."'

Yep, Romney supports terrorism as a role model for the US.  And this is the GOP front runner.  Like Bill Murray said in Groundhog Day, "Moron, your bus is leaving."

Mother Jones Scoop: FBI and the OKC bombings

This is some superb investigative reporting by veteran muckraker James Ridgeway. It is also one hell of an important story.

"Jesse Carl Trentadue is no liberal crusader, nor is he an antigovernment conspiracy theorist. He grew up poor in an Appalachian coal camp, called Number 7, halfway between Cucumber, West Virginia, and Horsepen, Virginia. Earlier generations of Trentadue men had all gone into the mines: One grandfather had first descended at age six, another at age 12, and both had died of black lung, as would Jesse's father. But coal prices fell during the Korean War, and in 1961 the Trentadues followed a neighboring family to Orange County, California. They traveled, Jesse says, "like the Okies," heading west on Route 66, sleeping beside the car at night.

Jesse's ticket to a different life was a track and field scholarship to the University of Southern California where, like his teammate O.J. Simpson, he made all-American. After a stint in the Marines and law school at the University of Idaho, he landed in Salt Lake City, where he built a reputation as a tough, tenacious lawyer working everything from sports law to contract disputes. He met me on a warm Saturday, on a bench in front of the Judge Building, the handsome, century-old structure where he practices law. Stocky, with a graying mustache and a neat beard, a cigar between his lips, he looked like the 21st-century version of an Old West sheriff—weather-beaten, self-contained, and shrewd. His office upstairs was dominated by an enormous portrait of his brother. It depicted Kenney in a dark shirt, looking calm and earnest, bathed in a glow that evoked the portraits of saints."

A Day In Contempt...

I thought we might examine the Contempt landscape as of mid-day or the summary of the GOP's contempt for the law:

So, the latest is : House Panel Clears Way for Contempt Proceedings/RE Harriet Miers (who was actually nominated to the Supreme Court and has now clearly demonstrated her views on the law).
